Install Java In Windows 11: A Step-By-Step Guide

The advantages of the Java programming language include cross-platform operation, safe use and practical functions such as multithreading, and the possibility of using it with the new Windows 11. Before installing Java in Windows 11, however, you should check which version you need: 32-bit or 64-bit Java. As one of the most widespread and appreciated web programming languages, Java stands out as the most promising choice, even for those who want to learn to program.

Just like Windows 11, you can also choose to install Java in Windows 10. You need to download free Java from the Oracle Corporation developer site in both cases. Warning: Java plugins are not supported by the Edge browser. This is why you cannot use Java with the proprietary Windows browser. Other browsers, such as Firefox and Safari, are instead able to support them thanks to special plugins or Java applets. Also, make sure which version you need, 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

Before Installing Java

Before installing Java in Windows 11, ensure it’s not already installed on your computer. This saves you valuable time, and you can start using Java immediately. To do this:

  1. Check which programs are installed in Windows.
  2. Type “Control Panel” in the Windows search bar and open the corresponding search result.
  3. Go to “Programs” and “Programs and Features”.

Here you see all installed programs in alphabetical order. You will find it listed if Java is already present on your system. At this point, you have to check if you need the version of Java for 64-bit systems. Open settings with the keyboard shortcut [Windows] + [i]. Once available, go to “System” and “About”. In the “Device specifications” section, find the “System type” item. If you see a “64-bit operating system”, you can install both Java for 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

Download Java For Users

To install Java in Windows 11, follow these instructions:

  1. Step one: Open the browser you usually use to open the Oracle Corporation Java download page . On this page, you will find a list of current versions of Java for Windows, Linux, macOS or even Solaris.
  2. Second step: download the Java version suitable for your operating system.
  3. Step Three: Choose between downloading online with the file in IFTW format (“Install from the Web”) or downloading offline with an executable EXE file. Next, you have to confirm that you want to install Java and accept the Java license agreement.
  4. Step Four: The Java Runtime Environment ( JRE ) is part of the Java download. This allows you to use Java plugins and run Java applets in supported browsers. A component of the JRE is the Java Virtual Machine and the core Java libraries and classes.

Download Java For Developers

Besides running Java in your browser, do you also want to use it for programming? Then download the Java Development Kit (JDK) tool free of charge from the Java website. JDK contains practical tools and services such as a compiler and an interpreter, an editor for Java, API classes, means for generating documents, debuggers, programs for developing signatures and archivers, tools for monitoring performance, applets and tools for importing web services. Of course, the runtime environment (JRE) is also included. The following instructions are for installing Java on Windows 11:

  1. Step 1: Open the Java developer website in your browser. Already on the homepage, you will find the option to download the latest version of Java (at the time of writing this article: Java 18). If you want to install the Java Development Kit, open Oracle’s Java downloads web page and download the files needed for installation.
  2. Step 2: Determine if you need “x64 Compressed Archive” in ZIP format, “x64 Installer” in EXE format or “x64 MSI Installer” MSI format file. Accept the license agreement to start and complete the download.
  3. Third step: depending on your download option, extract the downloaded ZIP file or double-click the executable files. The Java installation assistant guides you through the installation process. After a few minutes, Java is ready to use.
