OLED Or QLED: Which TV To Choose?

OLED, QLED… The two best TV technologies have similar names, with distinct advantages and disadvantages. At the time of choice, we advise you which type of television to choose according to your expectations. If you are thinking of changing your TV and are wondering which Smart TV to choose, you have surely already thought about some crucial points: its size, its technical characteristics (4K or 8K, Android or Tizen, etc.), and its price.

But before taking action, you must also decide on one final selection criterion: the technology of your future TV. Today, OLED and QLED are the top of what you can find on the market regarding displaying quality. A single letter separates them, and yet they have essential differences.

What Is The Difference Between OLED Or QLED?

No backlighting characterizes OLED televisions since no light is necessary for their operation. Capable of emitting their light, the millions of organic diodes (made of natural material) that make up the slab light up when an electric current passes through them. They then display the different colors of the image on the screen. The diodes are entirely off without current, showing a deep black. Democratized by the LG brand, OLED TVs are also in the catalog of manufacturers such as Sony, Philips or Panasonic.

Derived from the classic LED technology that uses the backlight of the same name, QLED technology (or Quantum LED) is brought by the manufacturer Samsung. It can light the pixels of light to be displayed on the screen (much like an OLED TV). Still, these are inorganic diodes, liquid nanocrystals capable, depending on their size and shape, of coloring themselves differently under light. Backlight effect. Enough to ensure an even broader color palette, more intense shades, and higher brightness.

OLED TV Or QLED TV: The Advantages

OLED TVs offer excellent contrast, with near-absolutely deep blacks that deliver an impressive picture. Each pixel can change color in just 0.1 milliseconds for an always sharp image. The OLED also guarantees uniform brightness over the entire surface of the screen, including in the corners. Finally, thanks to the removal of the backlight, the panel is fragile, directly impacting the television’s design.

QLED televisions provide a remarkable brightness level, with unbeatable light peaks (from 1000 to 2000 cd/m², for the most connoisseurs among you!). The color rendering is excellent, and the contrast ratio naturally improves, giving the viewer the impression of an ultra-realistic image, with more intense reds and greens. The TV experience is sensational, with an impressively immersive effect. Another positive point, and not the least: QLED TVs consume less energy.

OLED TV Or QLED TV: The Disadvantages

Although significant progress has been made in OLEDs, organic diodes degrade faster, which reduces color quality over the years and can create marking or burning phenomena. On the other hand, with significant technical constraints, the manufacturing cost of these televisions is high, which also reduces the number of manufacturers likely to produce them.

On the contrast side, there is a slight advantage to OLED on the other hand. If the contrast of QLED TVs is much higher than on conventional LED TVs, it is significantly weaker than that of OLED. The change of colors displayed on the screen is also slower, although the backlight scanning system designed by Samsung has dramatically reduced the problem.

Which TV To Choose, OLED Or QLED?

OLED televisions display fluid images that are exceptionally sharp during rapid movements: ideal for sports fans! Their wide viewing angles allow each family member to access the same quality. Thanks to their level of contrast, the image is charming in the dark. If you rarely watch your TV in the dark, QLED TVs, thanks to their bright and nuanced image, should delight your eyes, especially since it is possible to associate these TVs with effective anti-reflection filters. Another advantage of QLED TVs is that you will have a broader choice of screen sizes and lower prices.
