Hot Laptop? How To Keep It Cool

Pay attention to the laptop’s temperature, which overheating could damage various electronic components. Every year, in the summer period, the same problem arises at home, in the office, or in the studio: the overheating of laptops, which are the first to suffer from the summer heat wave and which, to cool down, turn the integrated fan to the maximum in an attempt to lower the temperature.

The high heat can damage electronic components. In particular, hard drives and batteries suffer from high temperatures, the graphics accelerator called GPU (basically the video chip), and the CPU (central processor). Therefore, it is essential to take some precautions to keep the laptop as cool as possible and prevent the temperature from rising too much, even making the computer go into protection and suddenly shut down due to excessive overheating.

Tips To Protect Your Laptop From Overheating

First and foremost, if you decide to work outdoors, you should keep your computer out of direct sunlight, damaging electronic components and preventing the device from functioning correctly. Also, please pay attention to where you place it. If you put the laptop on the bed, sofa, or lap, the air will not flow well from the vents, causing it to overheat. A sturdy case to store your laptop in is essential to protect it from moisture and heat and keep it cool. Also, when you use it for many hours, a cooling pad can be helpful to prevent it from overheating.

Another trick is to avoid keeping the computer in the car when the inside is hot, as it can cause the device to overheat and damage it in the long run. Dust and dirt often accumulate on the back of the computer, which prevents the fan from running smoothly. For effective operation, the fan must be cleaned frequently. Performing small and simple daily actions is essential to limit wear and preserve the life of any laptop. Background apps also contribute to the overheating of the laptop. Periodically checking and clearing all background apps helps prevent your device from overheating.

And then, thanks to the heat processor apps, you can run background checks to notice when the heat increases quickly. A bad habit is to rush to shut down your computer without checking that it is shut down properly. Always allow the device time to cool down to avoid heat build-up inside. It is also essential to pay attention when charging the computer and unplug it when it is fully charged. Leaving it charging can affect battery life and overheating.

Adjust The Fan Speed

You should know that there are also programs that can help cool the computer but should be used with extreme caution. One of the most famous is SpeedFan, which allows you to monitor the PC’s internal temperatures and adjust the fans’ speed, but it is good that you keep this in mind. It should be considered only if you know where you put your hands, in case otherwise. You risk doing damage. To use it, download the program to your computer from the official website by clicking on the SpeedFan x.xx link in the center of the page in the Download section and wait for the software download to start and complete.

Double-click on the download and open the file you just downloaded when the download is full. In the window that opens, click on. Yes, then on, I Agree. Next, Install and Close to finish the SpeedFan installation process. Then start SpeedFan and click on Yes and then on Close to access the program’s main screen: you will find yourself in front of a list of all the computer components (GPU, Hard Disk, Processors, etc.) with the relative temperatures next to it. To adjust the fan speed, you need to put the check mark next to the Automatic fan speed and wait for the software to do its job.

Within a few minutes, you should notice a decrease in fan noise and a stabilization of temperatures to acceptable levels. If this is not the case, you can manually adjust the percentages of use of the various fans using the fields Speed01, Speed02, and so on, which are located at the bottom left (the names of the fields may be different on your laptop, in any case, the values to be modified are those at the bottom left). And if you feel like configuring SpeedFan in more detail, click on the Configure button at the top right and enter the panel with the program’s advanced settings.
